"Truffo's Truffle Troubles: A Tale of Tasty Temptations"

"Truffo's Dilemma: To Eat or Retrieve the Truffle?"
"Truffo's Dilemma: To Eat or Retrieve the Truffle?"

Truffo: Sniff sniff... "Vita, do you smell that? Earthy... damp... definitely truffle season." Vita: Eyes narrowed, tail wagging slowly "It was truffle season, Truffo. Today’s our last hunt—so let’s make it count!"

The mist curled around the towering evergreens of the Pacific Northwest as our favorite curly-coated duo bounded into the forest, noses to the ground and hearts full of excitement. The end of truffle season had arrived, but Truffo and Vita were determined to go out with a bang—or at least a few really great sniffs.

Vita: “Focus, Truffo. Precision. Discipline. No snacking.” Truffo: “I prefer the term ‘quality control.’"

Each outing this season had sharpened their skills. Truffo, ever the enthusiast, had developed a true talent for locating black truffles. His sniffs were fast and focused—though, let’s be honest, sometimes too focused on taste-testing the finds. Vita, on the other paw, was the model of truffle-hunting grace: slow, steady, and never one to eat the profits.

Francesca’s voice rang through the trees: “Alright, you two—find the truffles!”

Vita trotted off with quiet determination, ears alert. She paused, sniffed, and tapped the ground with a dainty paw. Francesca rushed over, brushing the soil aside to reveal a beautiful, creamy white truffle.

Francesca: “Good girl, Vita!” She offered a treat, which Vita accepted with ladylike poise. Vita: “Truffles found, manners intact. Just saying.”

Meanwhile, rustling in a nearby thicket signaled that Truffo was... well... being Truffo.

Francesca: “Truffo?” Pause. “Truffo!”

He emerged, proudly, dirt on his snout and mischief in his eyes. His mouth was clamped shut just a little too tightly.

Vita: “You didn’t...” Truffo: Muffled “Mmhmmmaybe.”

A quick check revealed what was left of a perfectly ripe black truffle.

Francesca: “Truffo, we talked about this.” Truffo: “But it was RIGHT THERE. And it smelled so good.”

Despite the occasional edible detour, the day was a success. Vita stayed flawlessly on task, while Truffo—under supervision—managed to resist temptation long enough to contribute a few untouched truffles to the basket.

As the sun dipped behind the evergreens, the forest glowed gold, and the basket brimmed with fragrant finds. Francesca smiled at her two truffle hunters. The season may be ending, but their bond was stronger than ever—and Truffo? He was already dreaming of next season’s snacks.

How to Train a Dog Not to Eat Truffles

(Inspired by a certain snack-loving pup we know...)

Training your dog to find truffles is one thing. Training them not to eat them? That takes a little finesse, some high-value treats, and a solid “leave it” command. Just ask Francesca. Or Vita. Or... Truffo (he’s working on it).

Step 1: Master the “Leave It” Command

Why it matters: Teaching your dog to resist the urge to gobble up a truffle is key to successful harvesting.

  • Start Indoors: Hold a treat in your closed fist. Let your dog sniff, lick, and try to get it—but don’t open your hand. The moment they back off, say “Yes!” and reward with a treat from your other hand.

  • Add the cue: Say “Leave it” as soon as they start pulling away. Repeat until they consistently respond.

  • Level up: Place the treat on the floor, covering it with your hand. Slowly increase difficulty as they succeed.

Step 2: Practice with Truffle Scent

  • Use a real truffle or truffle-scented item in a mesh container.

  • Let your dog sniff, then say “Leave it.”

  • Reward big when they resist—think chicken, cheese, or their absolute favorite treat.

Step 3: Teach a “Found It!” Behavior

Pro tip from Vita: Sitting or gently pawing the ground works great.

  • Encourage your dog to alert you with a specific behavior (not eating!) when they find a truffle.

  • Mark and reward the behavior with a clicker or verbal praise and treats.

Step 4: Simulate Real Hunts

  • Practice in truffle-friendly areas with your dog on a leash.

  • Stay nearby and ready to cue “Leave it.”

  • Reward immediately for correct indications.

Step 5: Troubleshoot with Patience

  • If your dog eats a truffle: Don’t scold—reset the situation and reinforce the “leave it” cue.

  • Scent games: Hide truffle-scented items at home for fun practice.

  • Taper treats gradually: Once your dog is reliable, you can ease off treats—but keep up the praise!

Vita: “I highly recommend the chicken liver treats. Truffo responds particularly well to those.” Truffo: “You ate my training treat last week!” Vita: “And you ate the truffle. Balance, dear brother.”

Training your dog not to eat truffles takes time, but it’s completely doable with consistency and the right motivation. Whether your pup is a disciplined digger like Vita or a charming rule-bender like Truffo, patience and positive reinforcement go a long way.
